Today in First Grade


Phonics:

 In phonics we talked about words that have vowels that don't follow the rule.  



Reading Groups:


Group A:     The Four Seasons

Group B:      Colonial Williamsburg

Group C:      Animals Together    Pig's Skin


Then Mrs. B came and gave a lesson about being good people.


After lunch we had our last character building assembly.


Today was early out.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:


In phonics, we talked about words that have blends that don't really blend together and that are split between the syllables.


Reading Groups:

Group A:      The Secret of Magnets

Group B:      Frog or Toad       Animal Armor

Group C:      Signs


Our drama lady, Mrs. E, came out to help the whole school practice for the program tonight.



After lunch we did our regular book reading.  Then we did our big end-of-the-year math test.  It took most of the afternoon.  We tried to break the test up by having some fun outside between parts of the test.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:

Today we learned about words that end with "le".


The workers form Home Depot came out and made wood crafts with the children.






Then we did lots of reading together.

After lunch we read books, did a word play, practiced for our evening program, and had some fun outside.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:


Today we talked about "ous,"  which sounds like  "us"  at the end of a word.  It means to have a lot or intensity of what the word is.


Reading Groups:


Group A:     The Four Seasons

Group B:      Colonial Williamsburg

Group C:      Animals Together       Pig's Skin


Math:

We did the unit test about plane geometry that we have been studying. 



After lunch we read books, went to computers, and PE.

For the last hour of the day we had a woman come that gave a presentation about eating healthily for good nutrition.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:

Today we did "sion" and compared it to the "tion" that we learned last time.  We talked about how to tell the two apart.  Sometimes it is hard, but here are the clues.  If it is proceeded by  s,  l,  or n,  then it will be "sion."  If it makes a harder sound, sort of like a "jhun," then it will be "sion."

Group C:     The Bakery      Elephants


Math:

Today we talked about fourths, or quarters.


After lunch we read books, went to the library, and PE.   The drama lady was sick today, so we practiced our part for the program next week all by ourselves.  

We ended the day watching another Piano Guys video.  We are enjoying them.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:

Today we did "tion."  It means the action pertaining to the word.  We also learned that when an "i" is in front of a "tion,"  it does the short sound.

Group B:      Out in Space      Wind Power

Group C:      Bird Watching        Tigers


Math:

Today we talked about cutting things in half, how many halves make a whole, that a half must be an equal share or part, or it is just two pieces not a half, and how to spell the words half and halves.

After lunch we read books, did a word play, had a birthday party and watched a Piano Guys' video.   Then we had an assembly where we listened to a lovely performance of the school's choir performing patriotic songs.  They did a wonderful performance.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:

Today we did a worksheet about splitting large words into different syllables.


Reading Groups:


Group A:     Heather's Book

Group B:     Friends Forever

Group C:     Looking Like Plants      Trail Riding


Math:

We learned about equal parts--equal shares.  We practiced cutting geometric shape into equal and unequal parts.


After lunch we started a story about bees.  We didn't get very far, since there is so much to all doubt and so much discussion.



Today was early out.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:


Today we split both three and four syllable words.

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Walking Up Walls

Group B:     Green       Art

Group C:     My Pet Lamb      Let's Make Pancakes




Math:

Today we practiced cutting specific geometric shapes into smaller, similar, shapes.  We are using triangles, rectangles, squares (which is also a rectangle), rhombuses, and trapezoids.


Then we cut geometric shapes into dissimilar shapes.



After lunch we did a word play, finished more math, wrote sentences, and watched a movie about motion and how shapes and objects move.  It went right along with our geometry because it talked about and compared 3-D shapes like rectangular prisms, spheres, cones,  blocks, and showed how they move.

Since it is the end of the year, we have started beginning and ending each day by watching a video performed by The Piano Guys.  They are entertaining to the children and it give the children an experience with quality, beautify music

Phonics:


Today we worked on splitting three syllable words (and one four-syllable word).

Math:

We are continuing to learn how to use smaller shapes to make larger shapes.  The shapes are getting more complicates.


After lunch we read books, went to computers, and PE.   We ended our day with finishing math and a few other unfinished works.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:


Today we continued to divide words into syllables by the boxing method.  We are still working on two-syllable words.   I work hard to increase their awareness of how words are made sand also increase their vocabulary and understanding of words.  


Reading Groups:


Group A:     Mr. Wolf Tries Again

Group B:     Message on a Rocket

Group C:     Under the Sea     Sour Grapes



Math:


We are till doing geometry.  We are working on how to use smaller shapes to make bigger shapes.


After Lunch we read books, went to the library, had P.E., and then drama.



We finished our day by having the spelling test of our last group of new words for the year.   We will continue to review words that we have already learned.

Phonics:

We practiced how to box syllables of multi-syllable words that have adjacent vowels.


Reading Groups:

Group A:     Rainforest Plants

Group B:     When I Grow Up

Group C:     The Real Princess       Fairy Godmother's Diary



Math:

Today we had fun making and comparing shapes with pattern blocks.  The kids had so much fun that it was hard to get them to stop playing with the blocks and do their work.





We also read other books, did a word play, a spelling words practice, and talked a little about how commas are used.

Today in First Grade


Phonics:

We practiced boxing and marking multi-syllable words that have quiet  e  on the end.


Reading Groups:

Group A:     Sebastian's New Sister

Group B:     Holiday's Through the Year

Group C:     The Ugly Duckling          Whales on the World Wide Web


Then Mrs. B gave a lesson about being good friends.





Math:

We talked about different shapes and what characteristics define them as different shapes.  I showed different kinds of triangles and different sizes of rectangles, and explained that they are still triangles and rectangles.


We also learned the terms curved and straight.  We practiced sorting according to curved and straight.



We received back our ceramics after the glaze was fired.  They look really nice.  We will have them displayed at our arts night next month.
