Phonics:

We reviewed the special vowel combinations we had already studied:  au, aw, ou, and ow.
We also talked about a new set of special vowel combinations:  oi and oy.

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Making Spaghetti

Group B:     Mr. Wolf Leaves Town

Group C:     Animal Diggers        Space Travel

Math:

We did worksheets that helped us practice telling time using both the hour hand and the minute hand-- to the hour and to the half hour.

After lunch:

We read books, went to the Library, PE, Drama, and had the last spelling test of the week.  Words are getting harder each week.  Here are next week's words:

Today we had a presentation from the Clark Planetarium.

He used a lot of liquid hydrogen and blow torches to talk about molecules and states of matter --  liquid, solid, gas.

And we got to hold a real meteorite.

Reading Groups:

Group A:    Two Snakes     The Fox and the Snail

Group B:    Rainforest Plants      Sebastian's New Sister

Group C:    My Shells       Predators

Math:

We used both the hour hand and the minute hand to tell time to the hour and to the half hour.  We also did some small story problems figuring out what time something would be if you started at one time and ended a certain number of hours or half-hours later.

After lunch we read books, did a word play, and did a spelling test.

We also spent some time working on the parts of the math that the children had troubles with this morning.  It is so hard for them to tell which hand is which and whether the hands are in front of the numbers or past them.

Phonics:

We did more worksheets again today.

Reading Groups:

Group A:   Whales

Group B:   My Trip

Group C:   My Street     Sebastian's Special Present

Math:

We worked on time.  Today we practiced knowing when it was half past the hour.  The hour hand will be half way between the hour numbers.

After lunch we finished some things left undone, like the story about houses that we have tried to read two other times.  It is such an interesting book that we have troubles getting it finished because there is so much to talk about.

This was early out.

Phonics:

We did more worksheets to help us with au, aw, ou, and ow.  These are very hard vowel combinations.   We did talk about a few words along the way.

Reading Groups:

Group A:    Winter      Camping

Group B:    Reptiles    Spiders

Group C:    Looking After Chicks       The Dragon

Math:

Today we started learning about telling time.  (Though this is the first actual lesson we have had on time, we have talked about it a lot through the year.)  We talked about the minutes, hours, half past, quarters (as we have talked about quarter a lot as being 4 parts so they would be ready for time), the difference between the minute hand and the hour hand, what the numbers mean, what the lines on the outside of the circle mean, how you write time with the hours on one side of the semicolon and the minutes on the other, what o'clock means, ... and much more.

1- One of the most common difficulties for children to learn to tell time is remembering which hand is the minute hand and which is the hour hand.
2- The second most common mistake is that instead of hours and minutes on each side of the semicolon, they think that the two numbers the hands point to go on the two sides of the semicolon.

After lunch we read books, did a word play, spelling test, and had a lesson about writing.

We are singing The Star Spangled Banner each morning for our song this month.  Today we had a lesson about the meaning of the words in the song, what the song is talking about, and what was happening in history at that time.

We also watched a short animated movie about the song.

Phonics:

Yesterday we learned the sounds of ou and ow when they sound the same.  Today we added the other ow sound, when it makes the long o sound with the w.

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Mapping North America

Group B:     Who's That Knocking at My Door?

Group C:     How to Draw a Dinosaur        The Loudest Sneeze

Math:

We learned more about longer and shorter.  We learned how to measure things.

After lunch we read books, did a word play, and practiced our spelling words.

We spent the rest of our afternoon writing about spring, since this is the first day of spring.
Here are things we brainstormed for ideas and words they might want to use.

Phonics:

Today we started to learn about  "ou" and "ow."  They work the same way as "au" and "aw" in that the "ow" wants to be at the end or close to the end, and the "ou" wants to be closer to the front.  If there is only one letter after it, then it could be either one and you have to memorized which it is.

Then our school science fair started and that involved the rest of our short day.

After lunch, we had our assembly on fairness.  We sang our song and said our parts.  They did very well.  Then the awards for the Science Fair were given out.

Today was early out.

Phonics:

Today we worked with "au" and "aw"some more.  I try to add many new words to their vocabulary every day.

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Water Can Change

Group B:     The Fox and the Crow

Group C:     Where Jeans Come From        Seven Continents

Math:

Today we worked on two things:

1.  Comparing length of two or three objects

2.  Using comparisons about the length of three objects to be able to deduce an unknown comparison of length.

After lunch we read books, practiced spelling words, did a word play, and practiced our performance for the assembly tomorrow.

Phonics:

Today we began talking about special vowel combination sounds.  We started with "au" and  "aw".   "Au" and "aw" both make the same sound.  They say the short o sound.  Remember that the "a" usually makes the short o sound when it is in front of an r, o l, u, or is on either side of w.   So how do you know which one of "au" or "aw" to use in a word.  You don't always know, but there is a strong clue.  "Aw" wants to be at the end of the word.  So it will always be the one to use when the sound is at the end.  It can also have one sound after it.  "Au" is closer to the front of the word.  So it will have at least one sound after it, and usually two or more sounds after it.

Reading Groups:

Group A:    Where Does the Water Go?

Group B:     The Giant Gingerbread Man      The World's Largest Baby

Group A:     Maybe I Could        Insects

Math:

We started a new unit today.  We started talking about measurement.  So we will be learning length and time on the clock --to the hour and half hour.

After lunch we read books, had computer time, and PE.  Then we did a little more of our math and practiced our new spelling words.
