Today in First Grade

This morning we talked about the tornadoes and the damage they caused yesterday   We talked about what causes tornadoes and why we don't have very many around here.  We also talked about how nice it is to help people when they have disasters in their lives and the various ways that people can help and donate for different things.
Phonics:

We did a worksheet that helped us practice boxing the syllables of multi-syllable words.


Reading Groups:

Group A:     Baby Bear Goes Visiting

Group B:     When a Storm Comes

Group C:     Butterfly Garden



Math:

Today we finished our unit about 3-D forms.  We also started our new unit that is learning about 2-D shapes.

The main topics of our discussion were:

1- Learning what the shapes are called.

2- Learning what a characteristic is so that we can define shapes and sort them according to varying characteristics.  For example...


Characteristics can be color, size, open, closed, directionality, number of sides, number of vertices, etc.


We also did a word play, went to the Bookmobile, practiced our spelling words, and did some math facts practice.
