See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

Phonics:

Today we did y when it is at the end of a word following the vowel  a.  When the a  is followed by a "y"  at the end of the word then the  "y"  gives power to the  "a"  to say its long sound.  This doesn't work with ey because "ey"  says a long "a" three-fourths of the time.  It doesn't work with iy because there is no iy.  It doesn't work with oy because we have learned that oy says both sounds, (like o-e).  It doesn't work with uy because uy says the long "i" sound, as in buy and guy.  So the only vowel this really works with is ay.  There are a lot of words that end with ay.

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Meet the Astronauts     Why People Move

Group B:     The Picnic        The Earth

Group C:     Taking Care of Trees      If I Were Invisible

Math:

Today we did the tests at the end of our unit about data.  The children did very well!
On Monday we will start a new unit.

After lunch we read books, went to the library, PE, and Drama.  We finished the day with our spelling test about this week's words and then learned next week's words.

Spelling Words:

Since we will only be in school for two days of next week (Spring Break -- Easter), the spelling list for next week will be for the week after as well.   The money words were this week's words.  The list on the left is next week's.
