Today in First Grade

Phonics:

We are still practicing the 5 phonics skills and how to put endings on them.

Reading Groups:

Group A:       The Hungry Farmer

Group B:       Hiding in the Sea     

Group C:       Sarah and Will        Walking Up Walls

Today we put more time into the concept we worked on yesterday.  Today we looked at it from a different point of view.  We know how to list the ways to make a small number -- like the ways to make 9 are  0 + 9,  1 + 8,  2 + 7,  etc... (Like in the picture above.)   Now we are just doing the same thing with the numeral that is in the tens place.  While the numeral in the ones place just stays the same, since we are only changing the tens.  Each time we take a ten off one side, we have to add it to the other side where the ones are.    
This concept is going to take quite a long time for some of the students to learn.  Some understand, but many students are still getting the tens and ones all mixed up.  We will stay on this idea and keep practicing it for a while.   



Word Play:

In our word play we did the word "because."  I explained how it is a compound word made from "be" and "cause."  So when we say "because,"  we are giving a reason or cause for something being the way it is.
