January 27, 2014

See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

Today was the 100th day of school.  We now have 100 tally marks, made a dollar from all our change, moved our numerals into the hundreds' place, and filled our hundred chart.

Phonics:

We are still practicing the five skills before we move on.  It is a lot to remember and we need to know them well before we move on.

Reading Groups:

Group A:    Maps

Group B:    The Train Race

Group C:     My Trip      Baby Bear Goes Visiting

Math:

Last Friday we practiced using tens and ones to build and take apart numbers between 10 and 20.

Today we did the same things, except that we used larger numbers (between 1 and 50.)

Spelling Bee:

Our school district has a spelling Bee each year.  We have decided to participate.   The words are somewhat difficult (it is a Spelling Bee.)  I will be sending home a list of the words with any child that would like to try learning them and competing.  We will have our class spelling competitions next week.  I think that the school's competition is a week or two after that.  We will be having an assembly about it on Wednesday.  I will give you more information by then.

Science Fair:

We also have the science fair coming up.  Each person in First Grade should do a science presentation for it.  Making a presentation will be easier for 1st graders than an experiment.  I will be sending home a list of subjects to choose from.   Some of them will be: the water cycle, a life cycle of some animal such as a butterfly or a frog, different types of soil, weather,  parts of plants or what makes plants grow,  and more to choose from.  I will be giving more information later.
