Phonics:

We practiced putting "ing" on words.  (We don't double x when adding ing.)

Reading Groups:

Group A:    Plants

Group B:    Springs

Group C:    Thomas had a Temper

Math:

We worked with manipulatives again to help us understand subtracting to make ten and then subtracting the left over from the ten.

After all our work, and computer time, and PE, we took time to paint (and practice our Christmas song).  Here is a collection of our Christmas artwork.

Phonics:

Today we practiced adding "ing" to words.  If there are two guarding consonants, you just add "ing".  However, if there is only one consonant guarding a short vowel, you must double it to make two guarding consonants before you add the "ing".

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter    I Can't Find My Roller Skates

Group B:     Where's the Baby       Seeds Grow Into Plants

Group C:     Hiding in the Sea       The Three Little Pigs     Growing Tomatoes

Math:

We used manipulatives to do problems together as a class to help us understand how to subtract down to ten and then subtract the left over from the ten.

Here are a couple problems we did together.

We had library and Pe, but no drama.  the storm was too bad for her to come out from Cedar.  Then we had our Friday spelling test,

Phonics:

We talked about the meaning of quite a few words.  Some words that were new for many of the children were: mist, pit, ramp, and loft.

Reading Groups:

Reading Group A:      What Color is the Sky     On a Map

Reading Group B:      What Do You See?     Flags Flying

Reading Group C:      Train Race             Fishing

Math:

Today we practiced subtracting down to a ten, and then subtracting the left over from the ten.  This is being a very difficult concept for the students.  Here are some of the different ways I tried to represent and explain how to understand this new concept.

Here are two ways to show how to do it with 12 - 4.

Here is a way to think about it with 14 - 6.

Because it was raining, we had indoor lunch recess.

A few words about next week.

We will have only two days of school next week before the Thanksgiving break.  We will do lots of learning and studying, but we will also do some extra stuff.  We are going to learn about the original Thanksgiving.  We are going to draw Christmas pictures to hang up in the district office.  We are going to make Christmas ornaments that will be hung on the Christmas tree at the power company.  We will practice songs for our Christmas program.  And on Tuesday, Mrs Woolsey will come to do an art project.

Today in First Grade

Phonics:

We practiced simple words that had one and two ending consonants.

Reading Groups:

Group A:          Pond       Tadpoles and Frogs

Group B:          The Tree           Taking Pictures

Group C:          Who is the Tallest       Gymnastics

Math:

Two examples:  1- Counting up to 10 and then adding the extras.
2- Subtracting from 10 and then adding the extra.

We are still working on the idea that you can subtract from a larger number by counting up from that number to make the nearest 10 and then adding the rest of the number.  If you are doing 17 - 8, then you need to think of the 17 as being 10 and 7.  The 8 that you are taking away needs 2 to make the 10.  And then there are seven more ones.  So 2 and 7 make 9.  So 17 - 8 = 9.

We had an assembly after lunch that was about responsibility and being responsible.

It was also early out.

Today in First Grade

Phonics:

We didn't do phonics today.  Instead, we were learning a new writing program we are experimenting with.  I think the children have made so much progress with their reading that it is time to get more serious out their writing.

Reading Groups:

Group A:     Shut the Gate       I Work at Night

Group B:     Looking at Flowers      Making a Picture

Group C:     Working with Dad      People Who Save Animals

Math:

We are working on another difficult concept.  It states that it is sometimes helpful to make a ten when we subtract.

Word Play:

Here are some of the words we discussed during our word play.

We compared the add of addition to the ad of advertisement.  We talked about the word seep and how water seeps through the ground.  This seeping water makes the sources of water for the wells in our community.  It also creates stelagtites and stalagmites in caves.  We also compared escape and excape (as many people say it incorrectly).  I had the children practice saying escape a few times together.

Today in First Grade

I usually demonstrate one subtraction problem during our morning routine, but this morning I did three. They were: how many days until Thanksgiving, how much is two quarters, and how many days are left of school.

Phonics:

We did some practice work papers about words that use one consonant and two consonants after a short vowel.

Reading Groups:

Reading Group A:     Riding My Bike

Reading Group B:     Signs      Animals and their Babies

Reading Group C:     Alphabet Party          My Brother's Birthday

Math:

I demonstrated how to find the difference by finding what two numbers add together to make the original number.   So if you are solving 10 - 3, then you think---"What adds to 3 to make10?"  If we know our addition facts, then we know it is 7, 7 + 3 = 10.

I tried to show how all the ways to make a number are the same ways we subtract from the number, except that we turn the numbers around.   When adding, we put two numbers together to make a larger number.  When subtracting, we start with the larger number and take the smaller ones away.

From each addition sentence, we can make two related subtraction sentences by changing the numbers' places.

Phonics:

We did some worksheets to help us practice one-consoant and two-consonant short vowel words.

Reading groups:

Group A:   The Bike That Spike Likes

Group B:   Mud, Mud, Mud     Sebastian Learns to Fly

Group C:   Where Do I Live?     Video Game     Shadow Puppets

Math:

We did some worksheet to practice the first two subtraction strategies.

After lunch we did our after lunch reading.  Then we had an assembly about Internet bullying.  We all need to learn to be safe on the Internet.

At the end of the day we had drama.
