December 2, 2013

See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

Since today was the first day of school for the month of December, we changed our calendar.   We do it together as a class so that they can see how the calendaring system works.  We also talked about how December is the last month of the year.  Then we will start all over with a brand new year.

We also subtracted the number of days we have been in school and then divided the number of days of school in half.  We have been learning our doubles.  9 + 9 is 90 + 90 should be 180.  So 90 days will be the middle of school.  We are at 70 now.

Today we talked about the word "an".  We compared it to the word "a".  We compared the words they are used with and figured out why.  We talked about how a vowel is formed by an open mouth sound and how it is very difficult to make two open-mouth sounds in a row without a consonant helping to divide them.  That is why we use an   "n"   to divide the vowel of the "a" from the vowel that is at the first of a word.

Reading Groups:

Group A:      Living on the Farm       What People Do

Group B:      My Farm              Playing Dress-up

Group C:      Show and Tell          A Pet for Me

We finished the last work sheets and tests of Unit 4.  It was about subtraction strategies.  Tomorrow we will start Unit 5 that is about the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Here are this weeks spelling words.  As you can see, the words are getting harder each week.
