See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

Phonics:

Today we learned two more blends-- dw  and  tw.  There are not very many words with these blends, but they are still good to know.

Notice how the words with two are related to each other.

Reading Groups:

Group A:   In a Cold, Cold Place    In the Ocean

Group B:    Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter      I Can't Find My Roller Skates

Group C:    That Cat!     Dinner by Five      Pete's Bad Day

Math:

I have started demonstrating a two digit subtraction problem each morning by subtracting the number of days we have finished from the total 180 days of school.  I hope that by seeing this kind of problem demonstrated and talked about each morning, they will be ready to do it by the end of the year.  This morning I actually drew dots to show what was really happening in the subtraction.

We have left our math concept of making ten and adding the extra (even though many in the class will have to continue practicing it), and have begun a section on adding three-digit equations.

First, we did another really big problem adding lots of numbers to make tens.  They enjoy doing this a lot.  Then I explained that the trick is that we are doing two at a time until they are all done.  Then I demonstrated how to do it with three-digit equations and had them start making and solving their own.  They found this to be a lot harder.

And it is always good to find useful combinations such as making 10, or 5, or a double.
