See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

Phonics:

Today we practiced K and C words.  I would say the word for them to write.  I tried to leave it to them to decide if it would be  c or  k.  Along the way, we also talked about how an e at the end jumps over and makes the vowel in the word say its long sound (its own name.)  We also talked about the sounds of vowels when controlled by r.  And I asked why the name Kirk didn't need  c  with the   k.  The answers are 1-  because the k already had another consonant with it to block any vowel from reaching over.  And 2-  the i is not a short vowel sound that a ck protect.  Instead, the i is being controlled by the r and is saying "ur."

Reading Groups:

Group A:      The Magnifying Glass     Where is Water

Group B:      Jobs: Making and Helping       My Dog

Group C:      Shut the Gate!        Tadpoles and Frogs

Math:

We did work sheets on the relationship of subtraction to addition and making 0 or taking away 0.  We also talked about taking a number apart and also adding on.

We had visitors today from the local medical clinic that taught a lesson about how important it is to wash our hands.  They put pretend germs on their hands and looked under blue light.  Then they washed their hands to see how clean they were able to get them.
