September 23, 2013

See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in first Grade

We talked about how it is now fall, what makes the leaves turn colors, and why they turn colors up in the mountains faster then down in the valleys.

Our letter was Yy.  We practiced learning the correct way to write the Y and words that start with y.   We also used a couple y words to practice knowing when to use the ck at the end of the word (when there is a short vowel before it.)  We also practiced the ing and ed endings with some of the words.  We also mentioned how the "ow" makes two different sounds-- the sound you make when you get hurt such as in house, and the long O sound such as at the end of yellow.

Reading groups:

As we are practicing subtraction, I am trying to show them that the same math facts we are learning for addition are the same ones we use for subtraction.  The two numbers we add together to make a big number are related to each other when we take one of them away again from the big number.

Word Play

We made lots of words with our letters today.  Two of the big words we made were hopped and shopped, which required us to double a letter in order to add the "ed" ending.

Spelling words for this week are:

There will be a substitute teacher on Wednesday morning.
