See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

We got a new student in our class today.  Now we have 20 students in first grade.

Phonics:

Today we practiced the letter Nn and made words with it.

Reading Groups:

Group A       Winter    --coat, gloves, boots, put
On My Head     --head, wear, (double letter before adding "ing"--swimming, fishing)
(if the vowel is long, then no double letter when adding "ing"   --riding, skating)

Group B       Sandwiches  --  sandwiches (especially the "es" on the end), the days of the week
We Need Water  --people, oceans, rivers, lakes, washing

Group C   Apple Tree Year  --leaves, names of the seasons,

Homes Around the World  --clay, apartment

Math:

Together, we found the 6 ways to make 5 and the 10 ways to make 9.  We talked about how you can guess or you can do the pattern to make sure you found all the ways.  Then they had to find all the ways to make ten by themselves.

After lunch we read, as a class, the story Jack and Rick.  We talked about having problems and solving them, helping each other, and working together.  We also talked about figuring out who was Rick and who was Jack.  Sometimes you have to figure things out from the clues in the story.  We also talked about bridges.

Some other things we talked about during the day:
The endings ing, s, and ed.
The letters that make the "a" say the short "o" sound-- L as in all, R as in bar, W as in water or raw, and u as in Paul.

Wednesday --early out.
