September 30, 2013

See what we're learning.
Talk and share with your child about the day.
Review and give extra help and practice if needed.

Today in First Grade

Phonics:

We worked on Uu again.  Not because it is really hard, but it is a little hard.
Here are also the spelling words on the board along with some u words we talked about.   We compared the words sun and son and how they sound the same but mean different things and are spelled differently.  We talked about what a bud is (something that is starting to grow or a flower that is not opened up yet.)   We talked about the bun of a hamburger and the bun of a girl's hairdo.   We talked about the word sub and how it means under, such as in submarine (under water) or subway (a way under the city), and how the sandwich (see submarine sandwich in Wikipedia) and subway eating place got their name.  And we talked about what a mug for hot coco is.  Vocabulary is very important.  New words don't have to be big, just new.  -Or explaining the meaning of familiar words.  Words are fun!

Reading Groups:

Group A:    We continued with the book    School Then and Now.  It has some hard words we       needed to practice a bit more.

Group B:         Hamburger           Sniff

Group C:      Birthday Cakes         Tickling

Math:
We did more practice and review.  We are moving slowly.  This idea of more than and fewer than is confusing for many of the children.

We are getting out an hour early each day for parents to meet with teachers.  Hope to see you there.
