Today in First Grade

X is an interesting letter.  it makes two sounds together--"ks" so it is easy to get mixed up with ks or cks.  It does not need to be doubles when a vowel follows it, it needs an es to make a word plural that ends with an x, and it sounds like a z when it is at the first of a word.

We are still working on subtraction.   We are finding part of a large number by taking away one of the numbers.

In word play we had a discussion about "ch" and "sh" and some words we did were cash, check.

I try to help students tell the sound of a ch from an "sh" by saying that the "ch" is like a train and the "sh" is like a snake that is bing told to be quiet.
